Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Shampoo & Conditioner: REVIEW

I was fortunate enough to receive a Black Vanilla set from Carol’s Daughter which included the Shampoo, Conditioner, and hair sheen. I usually tend to go for hair products that are all natural and organic, but due to the fact that Carol’s Daughter Brand is marketed towards women of color and catering to our hair needs, I decided to gave it a go. I am currently in love with the Hair Mimosa line (review coming soon) so I expected nothing less from this one.

Black Vanilla Moisture & Shine Sulfate-Free Shampoo

The first thing I noticed was the delicious vanilla aroma that burst through the open bottle. It brought me back to a warm and cozy memory. I have to admit the first time I used the shampoo it left my hair stringy, brittle, and hard to comb through. It’s as if it wiped out any hydration my poor hair follicles were holding on to for dear life! One thing for sure my hair was clean, but was it worth stripping my hair from it’s natural oils? I wasn’t sure yet. So I took a look at the ingredients and did a little more research. Both the Shampoo and Conditioner’s biggest culprit found within the ingredients was Fragrance, which probably caused the stringy texture to my hair. Fragrance in products are a sign of undisclosed mixtures of possible toxic chemicals, to be safe I only use products that contain fragrance that disclose their ingredients using natural essential oils.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua),Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PEG-2 Cocamide, Fragrance (Parfum), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Citric Acid, Glycerin, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Extract, Melilotus Officinalis Extract, PEG-150 Distearate, PEG-200 Hydrogenated Glyceryl Palmate, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Polyquaternium-10, Polyquaternium-7, Potassium Cocoate, Rosa Canina Flower Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf Extract, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Leaf Extract, Caprylyl Glycol, Hexylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate, Caramel

Black Vanilla Moisture & Shine Sulfate-Free Conditioner

Now, when it comes to the conditioner I was in heaven. The formula is lightweight but still creamy enough that it made my stringy mess disappear and an ease to comb through. Since the formula isn’t as thick and creamy as a deep conditioner, I started to use it as my daily co-wash (washing hair using conditioner to prevent drying). I co-wash throughout the week my hair gets clean but retains its natural oils. I let it sit for a few minutes and was impressed with the sleek and shine the conditioner provided.

Black Vanilla Moisture & Shine Hair Sheen

When it comes down to it, the hair sheen took the prize out of this entire set! unfortunately it also contains Fragrance, but because of the other incredible ingredients I’ll continue to use it until the bottle is done. If you don’t mind using products that contain fragrance go ahead and enjoy, it truly is a great help for setting your hair AND refreshing it the next day. And because the Black Vanilla Hair Sheen has both few and powerful ingredients I’m not entirely opposed to it. Check them out :

♥Sweet Almond Oil
♥Shea Butter
♥Soybean Oil
♥Jojoba Seed Oil
♥Wheat Germ

Ingredients: Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat Germ) Oil, Cyclomethicone, Fragrance (Parfum)

Overall I would recommend the conditioner and DEFINITELY the hair sheen from this set. I would pass one the shampoo as I do feel it strips the hair too much for my liking. I already avoid using shampoo on my hair unless I want to deep clean when I’m in a rush. You can purchase yours at your local CVS, Target, Walmart or on their website.
